Colorectal Cancer Screening Guide

COLONOSCOPY
With the patient under sedation, the doctor uses a thin, flexible tube to view the colon and check for polyps and abnormal tissue. Recommended every 10 years beginning at age 45.

FLEXIBLE SIGMOIDOSCOPY
Similar to a colonoscopy, but for the rectum. With the patient under sedation, the doctor inserts a tube to look for abnormalities. Recommended every five years.

FECAL OCCULT BLOOD TESTS (FOBT)
A sample of stool is tested for the presence of blood. Recommended annually.

CT COLONOGRAPHY (VIRTUAL COLONOSCOPY)
Doctor uses X-rays and computer imaging to search for abnormal cells in the colon. Recommended every five years.

COLOGUARD FIT DNA
A large sample of stool is tested for DNA changes. Recommended every three years.

Colorectal cancer is one of the top three causes of cancer-related deaths in the U.S., but it is also largely avoidable and effectively treated if diagnosed early in its development. People 45 years and older or who have a family history of colorectal cancer or other high-risk factors are recommended to speak to a doctor about scheduling a screening. Several available tests can help detect precancerous changes before they become cancerous.

Anyone can get colorectal cancer. While some risks are inherited, others are avoidable.
