Keeping up with recommended vaccines can help you and your family stay healthy year-round. Two important ones to consider right now:
HPV Vaccine
Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is one of the most common infections, and while most strains aren’t harmful, some can lead to genital warts or certain cancers later in life.
The HPV vaccine helps prevent these infections, offering the best protection when given before exposure, ideally around age 9 to 12. It’s proven effective through the mid-20s.
HPV Vaccine Schedule
- Ages 9–15: Two doses – the second dose is given 6–12 months after the first.
- Ages 15 and older: Three doses – the second dose 1–2 months after the first, and the third dose 4 months after the second.
Did you know?
- 85% of people will be exposed to HPV in their lifetime
- 33,700 cancer cases could be prevented each year through vaccination
Parents and guardians can learn more by talking with their child’s health care provider or visiting the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) at cdc.gov.
Fend Off the Flu
Your best defense this flu season is a yearly flu shot – recommended for everyone 6 months and older. It helps prevent illness and slows the spread of influenza.
The flu shot is especially important for:
- Children under 5 years old
- Adults 65+ (ask about the higher-dose vaccine)
- Pregnant women
- People with chronic conditions like asthma, diabetes, or heart disease
- Anyone who lives with or cares for these individuals
You can’t get the flu from a flu shot – only protection. To schedule yours, contact your primary care provider or call Highmark Member Services at 844-946-6238.
